Semtech extends IoT partnership with Chinese firm Alibaba Cloud

Alibaba Cloud is targeting verticals including smart meters, smart cities and smart manufacturing

Semtech has extended its internet of things collaboration with Chinese firm Alibaba Cloud, targeting rapid adoption of IoT solutions across multiple vertical markets and new use cases in China.

The new use cases include logistics tracking, air quality, food safety compliance, and smoke detecting safety.

Alibaba Cloud is working to promote LoRa Technology in China as part of its IoT efforts, which include solutions in verticals including smart meters, smart cities, smart manufacturing and smart agriculture. The company has introduced the LoRa-based Airship Balloon, which connects sensors from 20 meters underground to 40,000 meters above ground.

“Semtech’s collaboration with Alibaba Cloud is fueling the device, network and application (DNA) of IoT in China,” said Marc Pegulu, VP and General Manager of Semtech’s wireless and sensing products group. “Our collaboration with Alibaba Cloud strengthens LoRa to become a core technology for the IoT industry. The abundant amount of low-power IoT use cases emerging in China leveraging Semtech’s LoRa technology will position the platform as the de facto IoT solution, and we anticipate Alibaba will be one of the industry leaders as it strengthens its ecosystem of IoT partners in China.”

In April, Semtech announced that Alibaba Cloud and Zhejiang Provincial Company of China Unicom jointly deployed a pre-commercial service for the IoT, based on LoRa devices and wireless radio frequency technology, in Hanghzou and Ningbo, China. The Zhejiang Provincial Company of China Unicom is expected to deploy a LoRaWAN network in the two cities this year, to expand the services of its IoT network.

Using Semtech’s LoRa technology, Alibaba Cloud plans to support an extensive ecosystem created by LoRa-based sensors.
