AT&T equips Airstream ‘Silver Bullet’ with LTE hotspot, IoT sensors for smart camping

AT&T has signed with caravan maker Airstream to make its ‘Silver Bullet’ travel trailers smart. The pair claim its iconic RV wagons will be the “most high-tech” on the road, equipped with LTE hotspots, and IoT system controls.

AT&T said it will provide in-built 4G LTE connectivity to the 2019 model of the Airstream Classic trailer. Up to 10 devices will be able to connect to its Wi-Fi hotspot for entertainment and information services, as well as for climate and system controls.

With regards internet-of-things (IoT) sensors, AT&T said Airstream customers will be able to remotely monitor and control indoor temperature, propane tanks, battery power, water levels, lighting, awnings, and ventilation via mobile app.

A GPS locator will also feature, as standard in the 2019 model. AT&T said Airstream data plans will start at $25 per month for 5GB of monthly data or $360 per year for unlimited data.

Chris Penrose, president of IoT solutions at AT&T, said: “The internet of things is transforming the way we work and play every day. We’re making it easier to stay connected and bring the conveniences of home – even while you’re out camping with friends or family.”

Airstream President and chief executive Bob Wheeler, said: “Digital technology has improved almost every aspect of our lives. Shouldn’t it make camping better, too? We think so. We’re leading the way with our new smart control technology and connectivity solution, starting with our Airstream Classic travel trailers.”
